    Title:
Microsoft Word's Format Painter doesn't work when Dragon 12 is open
    Content:

I recently upgraded from Dragon 10, and I do not think that I had this problem with the previous version. To be specific, I will seek to use Format Painter while the microphone is off on Dragon but the program is open. The format painter seems to be working fine as I highlight the text whose format I wish to apply to another section, but when I then drag the "paintbrush" across the text to be changed nothing happens. I am seeking to use format painter in a Word document. If I close Dragon 12, format painter again works in its usual way.

Nuance tech support wrote me it is not supposted to work. "Please take note that Format Painter is not compatible with Dragon Naturally Speaking. The workaround that you can do is to finish your dictation in Microsoft Word then use Format Painter after."

They should say that they made it no longer work, in Ver 12. It worked in 11 and prior. Also, to do their workaround, I have to shut off DNS to do the formating. This is just not how I work on documents. Very old fashioned.

I have this problem. I just upgraded to DNS12. Have been using progressive versions of MS Word and DNS for over a decade.

I rebooted. Started DNS12. Started Word. Wrote a word and bolded it. Wrote another word. Clicked on the bolded word. Clicked the Format Painter icon. Clicked the second word. No bold.

Format works in MS Powerpoint and Excel, but not in Outlook, which is using Word for editing. Google docs painter works.

This demonstrates a bug. Not good for me as I use both DNS and Format Painter every day.

Ted, many thanks for your comments. I agree completely w/ you.

I totally agree with you. I've been using Dragon NaturallySpeaking from the first Preferred version, and DNS 12 is the first version I wish I had not purchased. There are other problems as well, for example the program often self-terminates when you are in DragonPad and try to delete something, or just press the "delete" key.

For what it's worth, here's a workaround I found that does not require you to close DNS.  It's awkward in its own way, not just quite as awkward:

Open up a new message in MS Outlook to use as a scratchpad. Cut a section from MS Word that contains both text of the format you want to use, and the text whose format you want to change, and paste the section into the new Outlook message.  Then use MS Outlook's Format Painter to change the format as you like, then cut and paste the section back into MS Word.  I'm not sure this always works because I think I also recall times when Format Painter didn't work in MS Outlook either (when DNS is on), but it does work at least some of the time.

I can assure you that on my desktop, Format Painter does not work in either Outlook or Word whilst DNS 12 is operational.

Both were working perfectly in DNS 11.5, but unfortunately I had to uninstall 11.5 to install 12.

I will be writing to Nuance today asking them to send a patch fix within 24 hours or I am going to chargeback my credit card transaction for the purchase and uninstall software and go back to 11.5.

        It is truly disgusting.

I find that a real shame. I have been using DNS since version 5 - I think - and I use it daily for my job, (I am a translator). Up until now, this feature worked. Now, with a new version for which I paid nearly 80 EUR, I have worse service than I had before. This is scandalous.

And the only thing they say is "finish using DNS". Imaging the time that would make me lose if I have to exit DNS for every formatting and then reopen it to go on. Ludicrous
I definitely advise against buying DNS 12. It's a waste of money.

I must say that I am completely disgusted with this feedback. I have been using DNS for over 10 years and Format Painter is an essential operating in conjunction.

If Nuance are saying that you need to turn it off in order to use the Format Painter then they have completely lost the plot.

If anybody from Nuance is monitoring the site my advice is get off your collective backsides and fix this problem ASAP or I will be asking for my money back under Australian consumer law as it could be easily argued that this product is not fit for purpose.

I am so frustrated with this product that I'm seriously considering uninstalling it and going back to the earlier version which I know works.

If anybody wants to contact me directly in relation to this issue my email address is gangelo@bigpond.net.au

Furthermore I am quite disturbed at the introduction of automatic dictation box in the latest version as I am unable to enter data directly into an HTML formatted screen. This is quite clumsy and another reason for rejecting this product release.

If I understand what you mean by the "automatic dictation box" then you can turn that off at least.  In Tools/Options, Miscellaneous tab, un-check the "Use the Dictation Box for unsupported applications" box.

      Eric

      Thank you for the tip.

      It worked.

However it was quite frustrating to find that this option was automatically enabled on installation when it is not really necessary.

Sorry I didn't update this before. There is no good news except that they know this is a problem. Last fall, I worked a lot with Customer Support just to get them to understand that Format Painter is indeed broken in 12. Finally I a supervisor viewed my computer remotely and saw it firsthand. Later, on Nov 8, 2012 at 1:45PM EST they wrote me they will fix it in a new release: "We had it escalated to a higher tier and was recently provided a feedback. From the investigation, it was found that this was an issue that a solution is not yet available. We are anticipating a resolution to be available in the future release." I uninstalled 12 and went back to 11 with no problem. I think part of the problem is few people know about Format Painter, and that can only be because they don't do much more than type in word processors and spreadsheets.

      That's good news, at least.

Here's another problem I've noticed with 12, and I wonder if anyone else has this problem: I'll be editing in DragonPad, and I will try to delete something by highlighting it and pressing the delete key. When I press the key, DragonPad closes, Dragon NaturallySpeaking closes, and I lose everything. This doesn't happen all the time, but it happens often enough. I tried going through Customer Service, and aside from having me uninstall and reinstall the program several times (which never worked), they had no answers.

The forces of darkness have finally prevailed and I have now uninstalled DNS 12 and asked for my money back. I have reinstalled DNS 11.5 which works quite satisfactorily except for the dreaded HOOKERR_NONOTIFYWINDOW  which seems to appear with monotonous regularity.

Also Dictation Box has stopped working although Dragon Pad is still functional.

      Altogether a not happy experience

    • Dominique Timmermans

Could anyone please tell me if that problem has been solved in Dragon V12.5 .

I don't want to loose time installing V12 again, then V12.5, if it hasn't been solved.

I think that problem has lasted long enough. I bought Dragon nearly 5 months ago and I still haven't been able to use it correctly !

      Dominique

I am not aware of there being a new release - Dragon 12.5.

However I was so disgusted with the problem that Ireverted to Dragon 11.5 and asked for and received my payment for Dragon 12 back from  Nuance ( Only the software price not the mailing charge). Since uninstalling 12 and reinstalling  11.5 Format Painter works perfectly.

It would seem to me that in a well-run organisation that if the bug had been fixed that they would advise customers accordingly and I have received no such communication. However with such a dysfunctional organisation one would not be surprised if they had fixed the problem and didn't bother to tell customers who had been complaining.

The old adage   "stay away from the bleeding edge" is as valid today as it was 30 years ago.

One is forced to the inescapable conclusion that increasing complexity in software development is leading is down one way path to chaos. Apple's attempt to trump Google maps is a classic example of such hubris.

God help us if we ever have to deal with our software applications and data solely in the cloud at the mercy of wet behind the ears developers who don't know how to adequately test their products, and in the rush to market send second-rate products to customerstond cause untold grief to users.

in another space I have spent days dealing with bug riddled software released a market prematurely and for which updated versions are apparently released every  6 weeks with bug fixes identified by customers coming to grief whilst using the product. Whilst this is a cheap form of UAT it does nothing for your product image.

I will stick with DNS 11.5 (professional for those aficionados who think that software version is important) and MS Office 2010 until the grief subsides it safe to put my head over the parapet.

Thanks to all of you have posted to this thread. You have saved me several hours of trouble and troubleshooting to arrive at the conclusions you have demonstrated. I promise to call nuance at the next business day and push them on this one.

It is disappointing to hear that Nuance has not been quick to provide a "Format Painter" command.

You would think that they would be more responsive to their customers needs.
