    Title:
Significant stability and usability problems with DNS 12
    Content:

I'm experiencing regular crashes using NaturallySpeaking 12 Premium. Two easy ways to trigger the problems:

    1. Dictate into DragonPad, and make editing changes quickly using the keyboard, such as deleting text. DragonPad  crashes,  and all unsaved work is lost.  There is no  auto-recovery  for the lost data, unfortunately.  Needless to say, this is far from impressive. I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect  DragonPad should never crash  when performing edits using the keyboard.
    2. Switch over to Microsoft Word 2010 (because at least that has autosave).  After a while, when attempting to save user profile files,  NaturallySpeaking becomes unresponsive and cannot be controlled. Microsoft Word becomes unstable.  After several minutes, control of NaturallySpeaking may come back.  But it might not, either, and Word doesn't recover in that case either.  I have EndNote X6 installed, if that makes a difference.  But I still experience these crashes even when I don't use EndNote.

NaturallySpeaking 12 is undoubtedly the most unstable version of  NaturallySpeaking (or even DragonDictate all those years ago)  I've used.

A regression compared to Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11.5 is that  oftentimes, the alternative entries in the  list brought up by "correct that" are sparse and  contain only different capitalizations of  the misrecognized text.   I characterize this as a significant usability concern.

Furthermore, another  regression is that it needlessly adds a space at the beginning of every dictation into a textbox   in which NaturallySpeaking cannot directly edit, e.g.  into an instant messenger window.

My platform is Windows ultimate 64-bit, 16 GB of RAM on a Lenovo W520. I'm experiencing stability problems with no other applications. I'm using a user profile that I created specifically for NaturallySpeaking 12.

i am so happy to see your post I upgraded from 10.5, kept getting the hotkey proplem. all it does is crash.

i contacted them with no reply. ready to return the product.

    • Damon Lynch

I am not familiar with any hot key problem, sorry. But it can be disastrous to lose  a lot of dictation because you've been concentrating on your work, and you forget to save it, and then NaturallySpeaking's DragonPad crashes.

ugh after almost two hours with nuance tech guy Brian he deleted my user after trying to Repair. Grrr. Then I ended up with four users. I had one backed up from five days earlier version 12. so go to out in and it has to upgrade???? Turned off all voice commands and cap feature won't turn off. Deleted from dictionary as well as then tried cha gung properties. Go in dragon pad and say he wore a baseball cap to the game. It comes ou he wore a baseball To the game

I find this to be true also. Dragon 11.5 was much better. Now I'm stuck with Dragon 12

    • David Titheridge

I've just obtained version 12, and have the same issue, though it was just as bad with version 11.5, so I've been unable to use speech dictation for months.

The final error messages in dragon.log seems to be:

      12:07:43  (RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE, 1722) (0x800706ba) in "dnsspserver.exe" process.

      12:07:43
12:07:43     In ComCallFailed(), couldn't get the IDgnError.
      12:07:43 Exception thrown (E:\work\1200relmob\shared\comcalls.cpp, 124).
      12:07:43
12:07:43 COM returned an unexpected error code: Details are The RPC server is unavailable.

has anyone had a reply about this from Nuance?

      • MaryJane Hargett

        Noooooo!

      • PAUL PIEHLER

Yes, I have had similar cryptic messages, associated with a Dragon freezeup.  The tech answer is to perform the REPAIR FUNCTION.  This seems to work for a while, but I can't say yet whether the fix is permanent.

    • MaryJane Hargett

I'm having similar problems.  I'm a court reporter and Dragon seems to hang up when I'm exiting and then finally closes.  It freezes up constantly.  How can we get this fixed?

    • Charlotte O'Hara

I upgraded from 10.5 to 12 premium. I preordered in August. I sent dragon e-mails about this with no reply.

My arrival date for the product was 9/6/12.

So I had the product in hand less then 30 days.

Last week I called to return it until " all the bugs were out".

I was told it was TOO LATE because my 30 day trail started on my pre-order date not the day I actullay got it & it was activated.

I also ordered a b lue tooth headset seperately.

I recieved not the calisto bur a plantronics sava to go. it came in an envelope wrapped in plastic with the dongle.

I have had nothing but issues with that too. so I wanted to return it also, I got an specific e-mail to return the calisto with DVD.

well I didn't get a DVD nor did they send me a Calisto.

Am I now to be stuck with the bluetooth headset also?
      venting.....

I also have had similar, frequent crashes using NaturallySpeaking 12 Premium involving make editing changes or cursor movements by using the keyboard (cntrl + delete or arrow key).  Sometimes they happen in Dragonpad and sometimes in othe places, such as Outlook. When they do, DNS simply disappears from the screen and task manager altogether without anything akin to a normal shutdown.  Usually when I reopen Dragon after that, it will work OK for a little while and then an error message will pop up indicating that my copy of DNS has been corrupted and I need to do a repair style reinstall from the CD (and even getting that error message to go away is a pain, as it keeps popping up in rapid succession and I have to use task manager to close it).  Needless to say, doing the repair/reinstall doesn't stop the problem from reoccuring.

This is not only a pain, but also a real shame, since the voice recognition in DNS 12 is clearly superior to that in DNS 11 or 11.5.  I can't help but wonder if all of the other bells and whistles they have tried to add (interfaces with bluetooth, greater capacity to control other programs, etc.) which while sort of nice are secondary to the main purpose of the program, have unnecessarily resulted in an unstable, buggy product.

    • Simon Jones

Yes, I am disappointed with the new release. As well as generall instability, I have found that the 'Spell That' function in the correction window does not work as, when you have correctly spelled out the word and say 'OK' instead of closing the window and inserting the word, it simply adds the letters O and K to the end of the spelling. You have to manually delete them and click OK which kind of defeats the purpose of controlling with your voice.

The suggested corrections to words are also not working properly - it usually just suggests the same word you are trying to correct but in upper case - it is advertised as being improved in this regard compared to 11.5 but it certainly is not - it basically offers no sensible suggestions. It means you also have to use 'Spell That' more often of course.

I was also told that  the ability to control the PC (as opposed to dictating text) was improved. I simply could not get it to play ball at all in that  regard.

Outlook kept crashing and I was prompted to disable the Dragon plug-in which it identified as the culprit.

I noticed no improvement in overall accuracy either although that might be because, try as I might, I could not get it to import my voice profile from the previous version ( the salesman told me it would do that automatically on installation - it didn't).

Finally, although not a problem with the software, I was persuaded to try this following a cold-call from Nuance in UK. The salesman told me that I could use my DNS 12 Home licence on 3 PC's. I think that is misleading as I understand that  it is limited to one or two installations unless they have changed the licence with the new release.

I have uninstalled and requested a refund - the only blessing is that on re-installing 11.5 it did pick up my original voice profile and picked up where I had left off. Maybe they will iron out these bugs in time but unitl then I will stick with 11.5 which I have always been impressed with.

      • George Rosanelli

Regarding the spell corrector, instead of saying "okay", say "choose one" instead (choose another numbered option if more appropriate).

    • Graham Hendry

      Simon,

I have found that the 'Spell That' function in the correction window does not work as, when you have correctly spelled out the word and say 'OK' instead of closing the window and inserting the word, it simply adds the letters O and K to the end of the spelling.

I wonder if you haven't noticed that the default command structure now requires a preceeding "Click" as in "Click OK"?  That would also have affected your ability to control the PC.  As in DNS 11 the feature can be turned off in Tools|Options|Command Tab but in DNS 12 it is the default.

If you follow the strict wording of the DNS 12 EULA (End User License Agreement) your salesman was incorrect - you are limited to one installation and one backup although you have more than two (number unspecified) activations.  Did you ask the salesperson if s/he actually used the product?

It is a moot point as to whether you should  import a voice file from a previous version.  Out of the box and after reading a single training text DNS 12 is now extremely accurate.  The only problem, as you are using Home, would be the inability to import custom words although you could use the Analyse Documents feature.

From posts here and on other Forums DNS 12 Does seem to have problems with MS Outlook.

      • Simon Jones

It is entirely possible Graham that I overlooked a change in the default setting you refer to. I have uninstalled it so it is too late to go back and check for sure! Thanks for the tip though - I'll bear it in mind if I am tempted to try 12.5 if and when it is released

I did use the Analyse Documents feature - and there was nothing wrong with the accuracy - I just didn't notice any improvement on what I already had with 11.5 after several days of intensive use.

I didn't ask the salesman if he had actually used the product - I guess I assumed he had!

The problem with Outlook and generally having to re-start it several times a day are enough to mean I don't regret returning it however. There seems little point in spending money to upgrade something if it works no better than (or possibly worse than) what I have already purchased.

I am experiencing similar behavior. I have Dragon Pro v12.  I use Win 7 Ultimate x64 on a Dell Precision M6600, 16GB RAM. I use  MS Office 2010 and Firefox 15.0.1 and Flash 11.4.402.287. I also have Adobe Acrobat Standard X installed but not Adobe Reader.

Everytime I use Dragon to move the mouse it stops recognizing commands. The mouse pointer continues off the screen and DNS must be killed and restarted. Since upgrading to v12 recognition has gone into the toilet. I even deleted my upgraded profile for a new one but nothing has improved.

I've used DNS Pro since v5 and this latest IS the worst to date.

Unless I find a fix DNS is useless to me.

I have been attempting to post this comment through my DNS 12.  But as with my DNS 11, it has the strange habit of posting my first test of the day with  accuracy, but the next time I attempt to use it, although it will ping encouragingly and even flash acknowlegment, not a single word appears on the screen.  So this posting is typed manually.

The DNS technician I worked with for a long afternoon could only suggest reinstalling the program.  (It seems to be a far slower process on 12 than with earlier versions I've installed.)  Any improvemnt?  Zilch.

      Suggestions gratefully received.

what a relief to see that I'm not the only one who is suffering with DNS 12. In addition to all the issues mentioned here, I am finding that even after I finish a sentence, DNS will  grab and move several words, rearranging them apparently at will. It is especially noticeable in Outlook, and it means that proofing becomes an extremely painstaking task, and requires substantial mousing.

even in typing this comment, words are omitted, the Correction menu is anchored to the upper left corner and does not actually highlight the words that I've told it to select, etc.

I've used Dragon since version 9 and this is the worst ever. Has anybody had any luck figuring out what the heck went wrong?!

typing is not an option for some of us

for some of us typing is not an option . I would be typing with two fingers if I didn't have Dragon . time I have been using Dragon since version 9 , so I don't go back that far but . I've never had these problems with other versions of Dragon ... This actually reminds me of DragonDictate for Mac whicwhich I gave up on yea Dragon 12 is typing extraneous letters for no apparent reason just sticking them at the inns of sentences as it pleases . . I'm going to leave that one there S

I did not type that capital letter S. It just appeared several times

Upgraded to 12 from 10, which worked awesome.  Bought the Plantronics BT300 as well.  Can not get the thing to work.  It worked one time then stopped.  Every time i try to set it up the blue bar on the left is almost full but I get the error sound level to low.  Sent a help ticket a week ago but no response.  Want to send the whole mess back and go back to 10.  Sure wish someone from nuance would respond.  Not a happy camper.  Running on Window Ultimate 64 bit new install 8 GB Ram.  Brand new 128 GB solid state drive with only Windows, Dragon and Family tree installed.  Sure woud like to test out the 120 new enhancements.

I use Dragon Professional, the command feature can not be turned off.  If I say "He wore a baseball cap to the game" it types out: he wore a baseball To the game.  In addition, Dragon 12 is eating memory alive, I watched it jump to 900,000K, I'm just going to have to un-install and go back to version 11.5.  I'm returning this junk.

I was on the phone with "Brian" at Nuance tech support for over 1.5 hours.  he finally said to put disk in and repair.  I asked him: Won't that delete my user?  He says, No.... GUESS WHAT, BRIAN!  When he saw it still didn't fix my problem after waiting 30 minutes to convert my Dragon 11.5 user, the *** hung up the phone.  So I decided to paste in a Dragon 12 user I backed up 4 days prior.  And I get this message: Dragon needs to upgrade your user profile.  WHAT??????

It appears there is a memory leak in Dragon 12 -- that will crash your computer.  Since no one from Nuance is addressing my issues, I'm sending it back and asking for a refund.

      • George Rosanelli

Yes, I think there is a memory leakYes, I thinkthereis a memry leak. (This comment hand typed becaus DNS 12 would not ansscribe it.)
